Surfing the Internet without ads is a zen experience. More white space and no flashing banners. Google ads? What google ads?
With a little help from the Adblock Plus add-on for Firefox we can all strive for inner peace... but at what cost?
To install Adblock Plus you need to be using Firefox as your browser - and then install the add-on from here [+] mozilla.org
Once installed you have the choice of picking a filter for the region where you live or you can teach your system which ads you want to block. An icon in the top right of the browser window allows you to easily toggle it on and off.
It's so easy, why isn't everyone doing it? - but wait, what keeps the information flowing on the web? Surely a large amount is ad supported content.
Take the www.WebGuruGuide.com for instance, it wouldn't be here without the revenue from google ads to support the hosting costs.
Imagine a world where everyone blocks ads. A whole model of doing business on the web would collapse. That's what a few loud voices - advert advocates - are warning us about (visit www.whyfirefoxisblocked.com) but I don't think that's likely to happen. Yes, Joe Public is getting more Internet savvy with each passing year, but they're not ALL going to install Adblock Plus.
Some people like the ads, it's no skin off their nose if they click on a link that takes them to a service they were looking for.
Personally, I tend to mentally block out ads anyway. The last ad I clicked on was over a week ago and it was by mistake - I thought it was part of the menu of a badly designed site.
For people like me Adblock Plus is just a software implementation of my mental blocking abilities and it's not going to drastically affect my click rates.
So, for some smooth surfing with less distractions Adblock Plus is the business. However, for those of you who are information junkies, the novelty will soon wear off and those flashing banner ads can be back on your screen with a single mouse click.
Internet businesses don't have to worry either, there are enough eyeballs out there to keep google in business for the foreseable future. Just checkout the latest UK online advert expenditures - up 42% from the previous year! [+] marketingcharts.com
Will Adblock Plus makes things faster or be a disaster? Don't take my word for it, try it yourself and find out.
