Digg it in the Night

I have a theory, goes like this: Digg something at night (in Thailand), and you will reap greater benefits in terms of additional Diggs and higher visitor count (you can check this with Google Analytics).

There are a few factors in this game. You need an attractive title, and preview part of your story should be intriguing. If we regard these as constants, then I’m hypothesizing that when we (in Thailand) Digg our stories (here on WGG) at night, more people in America will see them in the Upcoming Stories, and thus give us (the writers) better publicity. I think it could be a successful means of attracting new visitors, who in turn, might become loyal re-visitors.

I want to test this, and I will, but in the meantime I think we (the writers at WGG) should try this out. Doesn’t matter when we write our articles, or when we submit them to WGG, just take that little extra effort to stay up for a few hours to submit your story to Digg. For those of us who might not have access to the website during these wee hours, maybe another one of us can step in, and submit the article to Digg.

Then after some time, our beloved leader (ken) can check out the results with Google Analytics, and perhaps share some of the less sensitive information here in the form of comments on this article.

And for bonus points we can all try to Digg something around roughly the same time. Let there be multiple Diggs at once. Let’s all create fifty-some Digg accounts… Um… ok that’s taking it too far.

Let’s try what I initially proposed!

Digg it for me!

I already know I won't be online tonight, so if somebody would like to Digg it, thanks a bunch!

Diggin'

Getting to the top of Digg can generate massive traffic for your site, including some potential customers... Sadly, the top articles on Digg are normally monopolised by a few authors - those that have a community of friends (or respectful readers) who can digg for them! There are sites such as subvert and profit, where diggs can be bought to boost a charge for the top - with the theory that a reasonably good article with a 200 Digg head start can get there. Without some 'collaborative diggs' then it is difficult for even the best article in the world to make it to the top - thanks to the so-called 'democracy' of the web!

Digg's terms of service includes this:
"By way of example, and not as a limitation, you agree not to use the Services:...
...with the intention of artificially inflating or altering the 'digg count', blog count, comments, or any other Digg service, including by way of creating separate user accounts for the purpose of artificially altering Digg's services; giving or receiving money or other remuneration in exchange for votes; or participating in any other organized effort that in any way artificially alters the results of Digg's services;"

Admittedly this doesn't make things illegal, just makes you liable to have your digg account closed. But, nonetheless, multiple accounts are against the spirit of digg - as is buying and selling diggs etc.

The focus of this article though is on timing... I wonder if strategically timing the placement of a story on digg might count as being an organised effort that artificially alters the results of Digg? I would guess it should be ok...

As for whether the content of this particular post is suitable for Digg - thats another matter! I certainly need my sleep in the small hours!

If you can't diggit...

If you can't Digg it, there's always the "buy me a beer" option, or the more preferred "Association of Every Dollar Counts Foundation"

It works!

I've just launched a complete new version of RalphvandenBerg.com and I've decided to submit some of the Ramblings to Digg.com at night. The next morning I had a huge spike in my graph. More than triple the usual amount of visitors, and all new! StumbleUpon also works quite nicely. If you want to drive new traffic to your site, I highly recommend both of these, because they both work.
