The Web as a Constitutional Monarchy

"Content is King! Content is King!" has been the rallying cry for years in the circles of Web experts. Producing high quality, constantly updated and relevant content is the key to attracting visitors to your site. More recently, as 'Web 2.0' has emerged, some have changed the cry to 'Community is King', as creating a strong community increases the value of your content as well as automatically generating content, so we've seen a shift in focus from 'producing high quality content to attract visitors' to 'build a community'. Certainly community sites such as 'Facebook', 'You Tube' or 'Flickr' are among the most popular, and highest valued sites on the web. But has Community really usurped Content?

For me, Content is still the King, and will remain the King, just now it has to work alongside Community. Building a community normally requires high quality content to begin with and just because you have a community, it doesn't mean the content is going to be better. People surfing the web are still looking for information, not just looking for communities to join, or opportunities to write in a forum!

Because of the 'democratic' nature of community sites, where popular content promotes itself, we could better see 'Community' as a Prime Minister, or rather a Parliament, which operates under the monarchy to provide for the populace. Sure "Content is King", but "Community Governs".

It's a vicious cycle

It really works in a vicious cycle, which you should take advantage of. Good content attracts community, which in turn generates more content. If your original content is good enough to attract smart/clever/active community members, they will also contribute with good content. One thing I'm always striving for, when building an online community is stimulating the members to be active by posting and commenting frequently. Make sure they don't forget about your community website by keeping in touch with them. On my website, I've done what FaceBook does, sending automated email notifications when new content is posted.
